What Are Binaural Beats ?

Binaural beats are a sound illusion that happens when your left and right ears hear two slightly different sine wave frequencies; your brain blends them and creates a third sound — the binaural beat — which matches the difference between the two frequencies. To experience this effect, stereo headphones are needed.

Origins of binaural beats

The phenomenon was first described in 1839 by Prussian physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove. He observed that binaural beats occur under specific conditions :

  • Both tones must be pure sine waves.
  • Frequencies played to each ear should be below 1000 Hertz (Hz).
  • The difference between the two frequencies must be 40 Hertz or less.
